A General Practice Nurse (GPN) is a registered nurse based within GP Practices. The role of a GPN varies from Practice to Practice. However, they are supportive to all care provided by GPs.
Nurses at all levels working within the Practice play a vital role in community nursing teams.
Examples of care and support provided are:
- Sexual health checks, contraception, final postnatal checks and cervical screening
- Health promotion, lifestyle support and onwards signposting
- Supporting management and monitoring of long term conditions including: diabetes, lung disease (COPD), asthma, high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart disease (cardiovascular disease)
- Prescribing and treating injury or illness when required
- Digital remote monitoring and service improvement to support patient care
You may be appointed or signposted to a Practice Nurse in a GP Practice.
Practice Nurses develop long term relationships with individuals and their families. This role is key in managing health conditions, improving physical, mental health and wellbeing of patients.
